Many people in Florida underwent surgery with implantation of the Ethicon Physiomesh™ Flexible Composite hernia mesh. Unfortunately, Ethicon hernia mesh may lead to infection, hernia recurrence or even additional surgery.
What is a hernia?
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a hernia occurs when an organ, intestine or fatty tissue squeezes through a hole or a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Hernias often occur at the abdominal wall. Sometimes a hernia can be visible as an external bulge particularly when straining or bearing down.
What is surgical mesh?
Surgical mesh is a medical device that is used to provide additional support to weakened or damaged tissue. The majority of surgical mesh devices currently available for use are constructed from synthetic materials or animal tissue, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Recall of surgical mesh implants
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posts recalls of medical devices which could result in an increased risk of serious illness or death. According to the FDA, recalls occur when a medical device is defective, when it could be a risk to health, or when it is both defective and a risk to health.
The FDA also analyzed common issues with hernia surgical mesh. Some of the reported complications may include pain, infection, hernia recurrence, scar-like tissue that sticks tissues together (adhesion), blockage of the large or small intestine (obstruction), bleeding, abnormal connection between organs, vessels, or intestines (fistula), fluid build-up at the surgical site (seroma), and a hole in neighboring tissues or organs (perforation).
Urgent recall of Ethicon Physiomesh™ Flexible Composite hernia mesh
Johnson and Johnson recently called for an Urgent recall of the Ethicon Physiomesh™ Flexible Composite hernia mesh. They state, "We are removing the product following an analysis conducted at the request of the Ethicon Medical Safety Team of unpublished data from two (2) large independent hernia registries (Herniamed German Registry and Danish Hernia Database-DHDB). The recurrence/reoperation rates (respectively) after laparoscopic ventral hernia repair using ETHICON PHYSIOMESH™ Composite Mesh were higher than the average rates of the comparator set of meshes among patients in these registries."
They caution that the action involves only the ETHICON PHYSIOMESH™ Composite Mesh product line. It does not include the ETHICON PHYSIOMESH™ Open Flexible Composite Mesh Device, or other hernia mesh or device products manufactured or sold by Ethicon. So if you have the Composite Mesh that is not the Open Flexible kind, you could have a case.
Quarantine of Ethicon Physiomesh™ Flexible Composite hernia mesh at Florida hospitals, surgical centers and medical facilities
Johnson and Johnson's recall is very concerning. They direct medical personnel to "Remove and quarantine the affected product and communicate the issue to relevant operating room or materials management personnel, or anyone else in your facility who needs to be informed."
If you are scheduled for a hernia operation, you should make sure you are not getting a recalled Ethicon Physiomesh Flexible Composite hernia mesh.
