What is a spinal fusion?

A spinal fusion is a surgical procedure done to join two or more vertebrae together.

What is the purpose of a spinal fusion?

Often, a spinal fusion is done to provide more stability to the spine and also to relieve a patient's pain.

Why would an accident victim need a spinal fusion?

Car accidents and falls can cause disc herniations, vertebral fractures, or ruptured discs. These injuries can be extremely painful and could cause deteriorating problems in years to come if not properly treated.

What types of spinal fusions can an accident victim have?

According to wikipedia and other research, there are two main types of spinal fusions: Interbody fusion and Posterolateral fusion. A Posterolateral fusion is where the bone graft is placed between the transverse processes in the back of the spine. These vertebrae are then fixed in place with screws and/or wire through the pedicles of each vertebra attaching to a metal rod on each side of the vertebrae. An Interbody fusion places the bone graft between the vertebra in the area usually occupied by the intervertebral disc.

What different types of spinal fusions are there?

There are many types of spinal fusions and each doctor and hospital may have varying capabilities. Advances in medicine also create new and improved spinal fusion surgery for car accident and personal injury victims. Some common fusion surgery procedures include:

•    Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) where the disc is accessed from an anterior abdominal incision
•    Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) where the disc is accessed from a posterior incision
•    Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) where the disc is accessed from a posterior incision on one side of the spine
•    Transpsoas interbody fusion (DLIF or XLIF) where the disc is accessed from an incision through the psoas muscle on one side of the spine
