Complaints of Maxi-matic Pressure Cooker Explosion

According to The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the website for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a user filed a complaint when her “electric pressure cooker seemingly blew out its seal and spewed boiling liquid and food onto the ceiling, cabinets, appliances and floor of the kitchen and the furniture and floor of an adjacent room (I measured the furthest point of splatter at 13 feet).” The user reported that it was the Elite model EPC-414R.

When I first received the product it worked great. I only was able to use it 2 times. By the 3rd time it gave E4 error code. After following instructions on how to fix the problem and the problem insisted I contacted the company as it says to. the company sent a new Thermofuse for me to install they said it was and easy to do. I received the part and installed it. Pretty easy as it say. Got the machine working again. about 3 mins into cooking the machine blew up in my husbands face spewing out boiling water and steam everywhere!!!! – james, amazon.com

Maxi-Matic Pressure Cooker Lawsuit

A California couple filed a pressure cooker lawsuit in the Los Angeles Superior Court a few years ago. They named as defendants Kohl’s Department Stores, where they bought the pressure cooker, and Maxi-Matic USA, the manufacturer. The couple claimed that while using their Maxi-matic pressure cooker, it exploded, causing the wife to suffer from serious injuries. A recent new report states that the case has been settlement.

According to the lawsuit, the woman suffered second and third degree burns from the pressure cooker explosion. She claimed that the pressure cooker was the Elite Bistro 8-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker.

Several other claims have been made against Maxi-matic for exploding pressure cooker burns. A complaint filed with the CPSC alleged that a customer suffered multiple second degree burns all over her body when her Elite 8 Quart Pressure Cooker exploded. In another report, a customer alleged that a Maxi Matic Elite 13-Function 8qt Electronic Pressure Cooker EPC 808R exploded and caused the lid to fly off and damage multiple items.

What Pressure Cookers Do

Electric pressure cookers are extremely popular and are sold at many major online and box retail stores, like Kohl’s, Bed Bath and Beyond, Amazon.com, HSN, JC Penney, Walmart, Costco and more.

Maxi Matic says that pressure cooking is an ideal method for making fast, tasty meals. Pressure cooking allows even the busiest cooks to prepare meals from scratch easily and best of all, quickly. The pressure cooker can be used to cook meats, seafood, beans, grains and even dessert – all in just minutes. It saves you time and energy consumption by cooking foods fast while retaining valuable nutrients.

They claim that cooking inside a pressure-sealed pot produces steam which helps break down the fibers in food and intensify the flavors of food with the marinades or seasonings you’ve used. The shortened cook-time combined with steam-infused cooking result in a higher retention of nutrients when compared to conventional cooking methods such as boiling, steaming or roasting.

Maxi Matic Electric Pressure Cooker

Maxi Matic has their office for returns or exchanges in City of Industry, CA. Maxi Matic distributes several models of electric pressure cookers and electric multi-cookers, including Elite Platinum 4Qt. 9-Functions Digital Pressure Cooker [EPC-414], Elite Platinum 4Qt. 9-Functions Digital Pressure Cooker [EPC-414R].

On their website, Maxi-Matic states that its Digital Pressure Cookers have an “automatic float valve adjusts with pressure build up and secures the lid, preventing it from being opened during use.”

If the Elite pressure cooker lid gets stuck, Maxi-Matic tells the customer to keep trying to open it. Its instruction manual says, “Make sure all the pressure and steam has been completely released. Make sure the small Floating Valve (4) is no longer in the up position. It may be stuck in the UP position, simply tap the lid slightly to make it go back down. Then turn the lid clockwise to unlock the lid. If it is still stuck, unplugging the unit may help.”

The instruction manual also says that, “As a safety feature, the lid will not open unless all pressure is released.”

Common Types of Pressure Cooker Claims

Electric pressure cookers cook sealed contents under pressure. Some of the most common claims we see involving pressure cookers are:

  • Float valve that does not stop the lid from opening
  • Pressure cooker lids that still open even after the user releases the steam valve

Common Injuries Caused by Defective Cookers

Our pressure cooker lawyers see various injuries as a result of exploding pressure cookers, including:

  • Burns. When hot liquid shoots out of a pressure cooker, it can cause severe burns to the user and those around. The hot liquid may shoot across a room and strike people several feet away. Some burns can be so bad that they require skin grafting surgery.
  • Scars. Pressure cookers can cause burns which can permanently disfigure a person. Scars may require revision surgery, laser treatment or leave keloid scars on a victim.
